Quick early strikes propel Monmouth past Grinnell football squad

GRINNELL, Iowa - Midwest Conference power Monmouth College struck quickly and the Grinnell College football team was faced to play catch-up the rest of the way as the Fighting Scots secured a 49-7 victory on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field.

Monmouth recovered a Grinnell fumble on the second play of the game and needed just one play for a touchdown. After forcing a Pioneer punt, the Fighting Scots struck just four plays later for a 14-0 lead.

After falling behind 21-0 early in the second quarter, Grinnell (1-3 MWC, 1-4 overall)  put together a solid scoring drive. Starting at their own 33-yard line, Grinnell moved down the field in 14 plays. Marcus Sung '28 had a 24-yard rush during the series and Henry Baird '25 hit Garrett Wilson '25 with a 14-yard pass. On a fourth-and-goal play from deep in Monmouth territory, Baird connected again with Wilson on a 6-yard touchdown pass. Nick Rhinehart '25 booted the point after.

However, Monmouth (4-0 MWC, 4-1 overall) scored twice more in the period for a 35-7 halftime lead and got single touchdowns in each of the last two quarters.

Sung led Grinnell's rushing attack with 47 yards, and Baird completed 14-of-23 passes for 55 yards. Wilson caught three passes for 41 yards and Lucky Carton '27 had three snags for 16 yards. During the game, Rhinehart moved up to seventh on Grinnell's all-time reception chart with 130 and 11th in pass reception yards with 1,501.

Hugh Werner '25 made eight tackles for Grinnell, Travis Chu '25 posted a career-best six and Kevin Johanson '26 had five.

The Pioneers have another tough task next Saturday when Lake Forest College visits town.
