Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell uses incredible comeback to push Stevens to the limit

UNION, N.J. - Dangerously close to being swept by Stevens on Friday, Grinnell College's volleyball team showed the grit it has displayed all season.

Stevens posted victories of 25-19 and 25-18 in the first two sets and looked poised to finish off the match by taking a 21-10 lead in the third set.

But then the Pioneers came alive, going on a 13-1 run for a 23-22 lead on its way to a 26-24 win. Grinnell trailed by five in the fourth set before rallying again, twice getting to set point before falling 28-26.

Jenna Keller '25 wrapped up the team's three-match swing to the East coast with 17 kills, while Millie Leonard '27 added 10. Kylie Snell '26 posted a .438 hitting efficiency.

Emily Brewer '25 and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 distributed 19 and 17 assists, respectively, while Leonard served two aces and tallied five blocks. Sophie Weber '25 had 35 digs, fourth-most in GC history for a four-set match and eighth-best overall, and Keller added 11. Weber is now just nine digs away from 1,500 for her career, a feat only three other Pioneers have accomplished.

Grinnell's big run in the third set began with a kill by Keller. From there, Gabby Choy '26 went on a huge service run that included two kills by Keller and one from Leonard.

After a point by Stevens put the Ducks ahead 22-18, Leonard followed with a kill and Brewer went on a service run. That spurt included two kills from Keller as Grinnell went ahead 23-22.

The teams were tied twice after that before a combo block by Leonard and Nicole Mlynski '26 and ace by Leonard gave Grinnell the win.

Grinnell trailed 14-9 in the fourth set before going on a 6-0 run that included an ace by Keller, kills from Mlynski and Leonard and assisted block from Mlynski and Leonard.

The teams went back and forth after that, with Grinnell building a 24-23 lead on Keller's block and 25-24 edge on a Stevens attack effort. It was later tied 26-all before two points in a row by the Ducks gave them the victory.

Earlier in the day, Kean University swept Grinnell 25-16, 25-23 and 25-22. Keller had nine kills for Grinnell and Mlynski hit .364. Brewer came up with 14 assists and served three aces. Leonard and Keira Sullivan '26 added three blocks apiece and Keller came up with 11 digs.

Keller now has 1169.5 points in her career, ninth all-time at Grinnell. Brewer ranks ninth in Pioneer history for both matches played with 116 and sets played with 402.

Grinnell, 17-8, closes out the regular season with four consecutive Midwest Conference matches. That slate begins with a home contest against Ripon College next Friday night at Darby Gymnasium.
