Grinnell football team wraps up 2024 campaign with strong effort at Cornell

Rams pull away in 2nd half for 26-7 victory

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The much-improved Grinnell College football team finished its campaign Saturday afternoon by giving Cornell College a spirited battle before the Rams pulled away for a 26-7 victory.

The Pioneers shot out to a 7-0 lead in the first period and the contest was tied at 7-all late in the first half before the Rams scored for a 13-7 halftime edge.

Grinnell played the Rams to a scoreless third period, but the hosts scored 13 points in the fourth to account for the final margin.

Henry Baird '25 was sharp as Grinnell's quarterback, completing 22-of-30 passes for 141 yards and a score. Baird finished ranked third in GC history in both season and career pass completion percentage with marks of 62.1 percent this year and 58.4 percent for his career.

Nick Rhinehart '25 added a career-best 12 receptions, a figure that ranks sixth in program history. Rhinehart had 65 reception yards and Garrett Wilson '25 added 40 yards and a score, giving him 13 touchdowns for his career. That ranks eighth in program history.

On the defensive side of the ball, TJ Lawrence '25 posted a career-best nine tackles, Hugh Werner '25 added eight stops and Danny Quirk '25 had a career-high seven. Bert Greene '26 also had seven tackles. Werner finished his career with 286 tackles, seventh all-time at Grinnell, and had his fourth forced fumble of the season which is fourth all-time.

Kevin Johanson '26 had an interception with a 13-yard return. He now has 128 career interception return yards, third in GC history.

After the teams traded possessions to start the game, Grinnell (2-8, 2-7 Midwest Conference) put together an 11-play drive that covered 80 yards. Lucky Carton '27 had an 11-yard rush to spark the series, which was capped by Barid's 28-yard touchdown pass to Wilson. Rhinehart kicked the point after.

The Pioneers drove into Cornell (5-5, 5-4 MWC) territory a few times the rest of the way but couldn't find the end zone.
