Grinnell men's basketball team sees comeback fall short in loss to Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team saw a huge comeback fall short as Kalamazoo College beat the Pioneers 130-115 in the season opener for each team Saturday.

The Pioneers trailed 61-40 at halftime and were down by 27 with 13:45 left before coming back, cutting the gap to five at 102-97 on Kai Te Huki's '27 3-pointer with 5:29 left.

It was still a seven-point game with 2:16 left before the hosts pulled away down the stretch.

Gabe Garcia '27 had a huge game for the Pioneers, erupting for a career-high 41 points with the aid of 16-of-21 free throw shooting. His free throw total is tied for ninth-highest in program history. Te Huki added 17 points, Sean Murphy '26 scored 13 and Harris Dar '28 and Jordan Lee '27 poured in 11 apiece.

Tolu Johnson '25 grabbed seven boards and Lee had six. In the assists department, Dar had four while Garcia got a career-best seven steals. Jackson Leone '25 added five steals.

Grinnell plays at Alma College Sunday.
