Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

GC women bounce back from rough start, but in the end fall just short at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team overcame a rough first half to climb back into contention in Wednesday's Midwest Conference battle at Cornell College.

In fact, the Pioneers captured their first lead of the game with 17.4 seconds remaining when Nora Lynch '28 calmly sank two free throws. However, the hosts responded with a basket in traffic with 8 seconds left and a last-second Pioneer field goal attempt was off the mark as the Rams eked out a 54-53 victory.

Bailey Strovers '27 had yet another double-double for Grinnell with 12 points and 10 boards, while Nikki Ware '25 added 10 points and Sara Booher '25 scored eight to go along with 11 rebounds, five blocks and two steals.

Ware also had four assists for the Pioneers, who are 1-2 in the Midwest Conference and 7-4 in all games.

The Rams, 3-0 in the MWC and 6-3 overall, got out to a 5-0 lead, and were up 9-7 after one period and 24-16 at halftime. Grinnell fell behind by 15 early in the third period but clawed its way back within 39-34 by the end of the frame.

Cornell built a seemingly-insurmountable 11-point cushion with 3:42 left in the game, but it didn't faze the Pioneers in the slightest as they promptly went on a 12-0 run. Cassidy Pak '28 began the spurt with a trey, Ware made two free throws and a 3-pointer and Lynch a jumper to make it a 52-51 game. The Pioneers' defense forced four turnovers and two missed Ram shots during that span, as well. Another turnover, a steal by Lynch, resulted in Lynch being fouled. She made both free throws to give Grinnell its first and only lead, setting up the thrilling finish.

Grinnell closes out its pre-holiday slate Friday at Coe College, a team receiving votes for the national rankings. The non-conference clash is set for 7 p.m.
