Pioneer women put up good fight against Coe team receiving votes for national rankings

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Grinnell College women's basketball team opened Friday night's game at Coe College on fire, breaking out to a 5-0 lead against a team receiving votes for the national rankings.

But Grinnell couldn't maintain the pace, as the Kohawks rallied for an 80-61 victory in non-conference action.

The Pioneers' balanced scoring attack saw three players hit double digits, led by Nikki Ware's '25 16-point performance with the aid of a trio of 3-pointers. Bailey Strovers '27 added 13 points and Cassidy Pak '28 scored 10.

Sara Booher '25 grabbed seven boards and Strovers added six to go with a career-high three steals. Skylar Thomas '26 blocked two shots, a career-best.

Grinnell (7-5) went to work right off the bat in its last game before the holidays, as Booher scored inside and Ware drained a trey for a 5-0 lead. Coe (9-1) followed with seven consecutive points before Grinnell went on a six-point run as Ware made two free throws, Pak scored inside and Adriana Perez '28 made a close-range shot for an 11-7 Pioneer lead.

Coe answered with a run of its own, tallying nine straight to end the period with a 16-11 lead. The Kohawks pushed their margin to as many as 19 in the second period, but a late surge capped by a pair of free throws by Strovers brought Grinnell within single digits at 36-27 by halftime.

Coe went up by 15 points twice late in the third period, but a trey by Pak and traditional three-point play from Perez again made it a single-digit lead for the hosts at 56-47. However, the Kohawks scored for a 58-47 lead at the end of the period and scored five straight to start the fourth. The host school's lead remained double digits the rest of the way, though Grinnell did get a late boost when Jenna Keller '25 made a 3-pointer for the first points of her brief collegiate basketball career.

Grinnell is off until Jan. 4 when it returns to Midwest Conference play at Lake Forest College. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
