Grinnell sees comeback fall just short in setback to Nebraska Wesleyan

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Grinnell's baseball team saw its comeback fall just shy in a 6-5 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan University Sunday.

The Pioneers trailed 3-1 before erupting for three runs in the seventh inning to go ahead. However, the Prairie Wolves came back with three runs in the eighth to go ahead 6-4. The Pioneers scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to get any more runs as Nebraska Wesleyan escaped with the victory.

Ethan Crawford '25 had two of Grinnell's seven hits, while Ben Kelly '25 had a pair of RBIs. Grinnell got a solid starting pitching performance from Jakob Runkel '26, who fanned seven batters in four innings.

Ian Brown's '24 sacrifice fly in the first inning put the Pioneers on top, but the Prairie Wolves rallied with solo runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings.

Grinnell went ahead in the bottom of the seventh as Sean Tashjian '25 and Kelly each belted RBI doubles and Michael Flaherty '24 plated a run on a groundout.

After Nebraska Wesleyan went ahead, Grinnell got a final gasp in the bottom of the ninth on Kelly's RBI groundout.

Grinnell (2-1) plays a pair of doubleheaders at Westminster College next weekend.
