GC baseball team drops pair of thrillers at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - Grinnell College saw a furious final-inning rally fall just short in its attempt to salvage a split with Westminster College in a baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Westminster scored a run in the ninth inning of the opener to eke out a 5-4 victory and then escaped with an 11-9 victory in the nightcap after seeing the visitors rally for four runs in each of the final two innings.

Ian Brown '24, Nikolas Ruden '26, Ben Kelly '25 and Nathan McCurdy '25 all had two hits in the second game to spark the Pioneers' 10-hit attack.

Grinnell fell behind 11-1 through five innings, with its lone run coming in the second on Brown's solo homer to left. However, the Pioneers began chipping away with four-run outburst in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth, Michael Flaherty '24 had a sacrifice fly to center field, Kelly knocked in a run with a double to right, McCurdy hit an RBI single to right and Cole Philpott 25 had a sacrifice fly to left. Mac McCain '25 plated a run with a double in the seventh, Ruden bashed a two-run double to right-center and Kelly's infield single scored another run.

Philpott and Evan Borberg '24 each had two hits in the opening game. Grinnell (2-3) trailed 2-0 before going ahead 4-3, scoring a solo run in the third on Sean Tashjian's '25 bases-loaded walk, adding another run in the fifth on Borberg's solo homer to left and scoring two runs in the seventh on Philpott's double down the left-field line.

However, Westminster (5-7) scored solo runs in the sixth and eighth and won it in the ninth with another run.

The teams meet for two more games Sunday.
