Grinnell baseball team snaps 5-game losing streak with impressive victory over Rams

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Just when the Grinnell College baseball team needed a victory, the Pioneers came through.

Grinnell lost Wednesday's opening game of a twin bill at Cornell College in heart-breaking fashion, stretching its losing streak to five games. But the Pioneers bounced back with an impressive performance in the finale of the three-game series, tying a season-high for runs in a 13-5 victory.

Grinnell tied a season-high with 17 hits and took advantage of six Cornell errors while committing none itself in the victory, which pushed the Pioneers to 10-15 overall and 3-6 in the Midwest Conference.

Sean Tashjian '25 led Grinnell's hitting attack with four hits, while Nikolas Ruden '26 and Mac McCain '25 added three apiece. Jake Hull '24 and Daniel Shaul '26 combined on an efficient pitching performance. Hull, who earned the win, struck out four in five innings while Shaul fanned two while completing the game and getting the save.

Connor Goodson '26  opened the scoring with a grand slam homer to left in the first inning. The Rams, who are 11-11 overall and 3-6 in the MWC, tied it with two runs in the third and two more in the fifth.

The Pioneers went ahead to stay with a four-run sixth inning as McCain, Tashjian and Ben Kelly '25 each had RBI singles and Ethan Crawford '25 hit a sacrifice fly.

The teams traded runs in the eighth, with Grinnell's coming via an error. The Pioneers gave themselves plenty of breathing room in the top of the ninth when Crawford blasted a grand slam to left field.

In the opener, Grinnell took a 12-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth before the Rams tied it with a seven-run frame and then won it 13-12 with a run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The game featured 29 hits, including 15 by Grinnell, and a combined 13 errors with Cornell making eight of those. McCain had four hits to spark Grinnell's offense.

Cornell scored in the first, but Grinnell went on top in the third on Tashjian's two-run double. The Rams went ahead in the seesaw affair with two runs in the fifth, but Grinnell retook the lead with four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. Joe Chanis '27 and McCain each had RBI singles in the sixth and Sean Richardson '24 added a two-run single. In the seventh, Ben Kelly '25 hit a two-run single to make it 8-3.

The Pioneers put up another run in the eighth on Ruden's RBI single before Cornell closed the gap to 9-5 in the bottom of the eighth. The Pioneers struck for three runs in the ninth, as Evan Borberg '24 hit an RBI single and Josh Fournier '24 plated two runs with a single.

But Cornell spoiled the party with its big rally. Grinnell used five pitchers in the game, with Ian Feld '25 and Matthew Nakamoto '25 each striking out two and Ajay Griffin '27 fanning one.

Grinnell next has a three-game series with Knox College, playing two in Galesburg, Ill., on Saturday and one at Pioneer Park Sunday.
