GC baseball team bounces back to topple Knox in extra innings

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team rebounded from a tough opening-game loss at Knox College Saturday afternoon to trip the Prairie Fire 12-10 in 11 innings in the second game of a twin bill.

Grinnell (11-16, 4-7 Midwest Conference) led the contest 8-0 through three innings before Knox (7-15, 2-8 MWC) stormed back, taking a 9-8 lead. The Pioneers tied it in the top of the ninth and erupted for three runs in the 11th to secure the win. Knox scored once in the bottom of the inning before Grinnell shut the door.

Sean Richardson '24 broke the tie in the 11th with an RBI single to Ben Kelly '25, who had also singled. Ben Schwartz '24 gave the Pioneers some insurance, blasting a two-run homer for a 12-9 lead.

Richardson and Nikolas Ruden '26 each had three hits in the Pioneers' 14-hit attack.

In the first inning, Ian Brown '24 pushed across a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, while Nathan McCurdy '25 and Evan Borberg '24 each walked with the bases loaded. Grinnell made it 5-0 in the second on Ethan Crawford's '25 RBI double and McCurdy's bases-loaded walk.

Grinnell tacked on three more in the third. Mac McCain '25 had an RBI single, another run scored on an error and Brown belted an RBI double. After Knox took the lead, Grinnell tied it in the ninth on Richardson's RBI double.

Neither team scored in the 10th inning, setting up Grinnell's final heroics.

Garrett Nasif '24 got the pitching win, striking out two in the final two innings. 

Grinnell outhit the hosts 15-12 in the opener, an 8-6 Knox victory, with Richardson getting five of those - one shy of the school record. Ruden and Crawford had three hits apiece.

The Pioneers went to work immediately, breaking out to a 6-0 lead through four innings. In the first, Ruden hit an RBI double, Connor Goodson '26 plated a run when he reached on an error and Crawford pushed across a run with a single. 

The Pioneers made it 4-0 in the second on Ruden's RBI single and tacked on two more runs in the fourth on Crawford's two-run double.

However, the Prairie Fire scored four runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh to secure the win. Ajay Griffin '27 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell. Jakob Runkel '26, the starter, struck out 10 in five innings.

The teams complete their three-game series Sunday at Pioneer Park in Grinnell. The first pitch is slated for noon.
