Grinnell baseball team emerges victorious in slugfest against Knox

GRINNELL, Iowa - In a game that resembled a back-and-forth tug of war, Grinnell College emerged victorious over Knox College 18-14 in Midwest Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon.

Grinnell established season-highs for runs scored and RBIs with 18 to complete the series victory over the Prairie Fire. Ethan Crawford '25 had a monstrous game, going 5-of-6 at the plate with seven RBIs. His hit total and total bases each rank second in program history, while his RBI tally ranks third.

Mac McCain '25 added three hits in the Pioneers' 17-hit attack to boost his career total to 150, which ranks seventh in program history. McCain has 224 total bases in his career, eighth-best all-time.

Grinnell (5-7 MWC, 12-16 overall) shot out to a 5-1 lead through two innings, scoring twice in the first on Crawford's two-run homer and adding three in the second on RBI singles by McCain and Crawford as well as a sacrifice fly from Sean Richardson '24.

However, the Prairie Fire rallied to go ahead 7-5. The Pioneers got a run in the fifth on Sean Tashjian's '25 sacrifice fly and retook the lead at 10-7 in the sixth as Nikolas Ruden '26, Connor Goodson '26 and Tashjian each had RBI singles and Crawford an RBI double.

Knox (2-9 MWC, 7-16 overall) retook the lead at 11-10 in the top of the seventh, but the Pioneers responded with five in the bottom of the frame as Crawford hit a two-run single, Tashjian added a run-scoring single and Ben Kelly '25 plates two runs with a double. The Pioneers increased their lead to 18-11 in the eighth on Ruden's RBI single and Crawford's two-run homer, a blast that boosted his career total to 15. That ranks 10th in program history.

Knox got three runs back in the ninth, but Grinnell shut the door from there.

Evan Borberg '24, the last of Grinnell's five pitchers, got the win. He struck out two in 2.1 innings.

Grinnell hosts Beloit College next Saturday in a doubleheader.
