Pioneer baseball team topples Beloit in series finale Sunday

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College got a measure of revenge on defending Midwest Conference baseball champion Beloit College Sunday afternoon, strolling past the visitors 8-1 at Pioneer Park.

Jakob Runkel '26 fired three-hit ball over six innings and struck out 11 batters in getting the victory, which helped avenge Saturday's doubleheader setback to Beloit. The Pioneers also slugged out 13 hits, including two each by Sean Richardson '24, Ethan Crawford '25, Kelton Watts '25 and Ben Kelly '25.

Grinnell (13-18, 6-9 Midwest Conference) scratched out two runs in the third inning on Mac McCain's '25 RBI double to left and Ian Brown's '24 run-scoring single to right-center. Watts belted a solo homer to left in the fourth inning, while Richardson hit an RBI single to center and McCain added a sacrifice fly to center.

Beloit (19-11, 12-7 MWC) got a run in the sixth, but the Pioneers got some insurance in the eighth when Crawford belted a three-run homer to left-center, the 16th of his career. That figure ranks ninth in program history.

Daniel Shaul '26 relieved Runkel in the seventh and Garrett Nasif '24 closed things out beginning in the eighth. Neither gave up a run and Nasif struck out three batters.

McCain moved up to sixth on the program's top 10 list for career total bases with 228, while Crawford now ranks ninth in fielding putouts with 506 and 10th for chances with 559.

Grinnell hits the road this coming weekend to face the University of Chicago.
