Grinnell baseball team collects key victory over Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. -  Grinnell College's baseball team picked up a key victory in its opener Saturday afternoon at the University of Chicago.

Grinnell erupted for 12 hits and got a strong pitching combination from Ian Feld '25 and Jakob Runkel '26 in a 9-6 victory over the second-place team in the Midwest Conference. 

Sean Richardson '24 led Grinnell's offensive charge with three hits, while Ethan Crawford '25 and Kelton Watts '25 added two apiece. Feld got the pitching win, scattering five hits and striking out three in five innings. Runkel gained the save, firing two-hit ball over the last four innings and striking out three.

The Pioneers broke out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning as Nathan McCurdy '25, Joe Chanis '27, Ben Kelly '25 and Richardson each had RBI singles. After the Maroons cut the gap to 4-3, Kelly hit another RBI single in the third and Chanis an RBI groundout.

Chicago sliced the gap to 6-5, but the Pioneers got some breathing room as Crawford hit an RBI single in the sixth and Richardson bashed a two-run homer in the eighth.

Grinnell (7-10 MWC, 14-19 overall) shot out to a 6-2 lead in the second game before Chicago came alive for a 15-8 win.

Connor Goodson '26 had three hits for Grinnell and Mac McCain '25 and Watts added two apiece. Goodson had an RBI single in the first inning, while Kelly and Watts hit RBI singles in the fourth and Goodson plated two more with a single.

Chicago (14-6 MWC, 15-20 overall) rallied for a 12-5 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and five more in the fifth. Goodson hit an RBI single to spark Grinnell's two-run eighth inning and Lucas Hadding '24 added a run-scoring fielder's choice in the ninth. Jake Hull '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

The teams finish their three-game series Sunday.
