Grinnell baseball team wraps up marathon weekend of games with doubleheader setback at Ripon

RIPON, Wis. - Grinnell College's baseball team wrapped up a marathon weekend of games Monday, dropping a pair of hard-fought contests at Ripon College.

In the opener, Ripon broke out to a 5-0 lead before the Pioneers erupted for five in the top of the seventh to tie it. However, the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and held on from there to win 7-5. Lucas Hadding '24 had a huge game at the plate for Grinnell, collecting three hits. Sean Tashjian '25 and Joe Chanis '27 added two hits each.

Sean Richardson '24 knocked a two-run single through the left side in the seventh inning and Hadding later blasted a three-run homer to left. Ajay Griffin '27 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

Grinnell (14-22, 7-13 Midwest Conference) bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the second game, scoring once in the first inning and twice more in the third before Ripon rallied for a 10-3 win. Kelton Watts '25 continued his strong hitting performance for Grinnell, going 4-for-4 at the plate. Hadding, Mac McCain '25 and Evan Borberg '24 added two hits each. McCain boosted his career hits total to 160, which ranks fifth in program history.

Watts had a two-run single to right in the first inning to open Grinnell's scoring and added an RBI infield single in the third to go with McCain's sacrifice fly to center. Ripon (11-20, 8-11 MWC) gradually clawed back, tying it 3-3 by the end of six innings before scoring two in the seventh and five in the eighth.

Ryan Jungers '24 came up with a solid starting pitching performance for Grinnell, fanning four batters in four innings. Campbell Plishker '26, the fourth of six Grinnell throwers, was the pitcher of decision.

Grinnell returns home for three games this weekend, beginning with a noon doubleheader Saturday against Illinois College.
