MWC leader Lawrence tops Grinnell baseball team

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team dropped a 9-0 decision to Midwest Conference leader Lawrence University on a beautiful Friday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

The teams played on even terms for the early going, with Lawrence leading just 1-0 through four innings. However, the Vikings scored four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to pull away.

Nikolas Ruden '26 and Joe Chanis '27 each had two hits to pace Grinnell's seven-hit attack, with Ruden posting a double among his totals. Ethan Crawford '25, Sean Tashjian '25 and Michael Flaherty '24 all singled.

Grinnell (9-11, 2-2 MWC) threatened in the third inning as Chanis singled, Flaherty was hit by a pitch and Ruden reached on an error to load the bases with one out. However, Lawrence (15-6, 7-0 MWC) induced a fielder's choice and groundout to end the threat.

The Pioneers also made some noise in the fifth when Flaherty singled and moved to third on Ruden's single. Grinnell had runners reach second and third with one out in the eighth, but both were stranded.

Ian Feld '25, the first of three Grinnell pitchers, absorbed the decision. He fanned eight batters and walked just one in five innings. Ajay Griffin '27 and Campbell Plishker '26 each pitched in relief and struck out two apiece.

Grinnell and Lawrence meet in a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon.
