Grinnell men have no trouble disposing of Lawrence to earn regular-season sweep

Tolu Johnson grabs 16 rebounds, most for the program since 1996

GRINNELL, Iowa - A hot-shooting day at Darby Gymnasium Saturday afternoon paved the way to Grinnell College's first men's basketball regular-season sweep of Lawrence University in three years.

ToluThe Pioneers drained 50.7 percent of their field goal tries, their second-best performance of the season, and got a dominating rebounding performance from Tolu Johnson '25. Johnson ripped down 16 boards, not only a career-best but the highest total for the program since 1996.

Grinnell continues to lead the Midwest Conference standings at 5-1 while improving to 12-3 overall. Lawrence fell to 2-4 in the MWC and 4-11 in all games.

Gabe Garcia '27 led the Pioneers' balanced scoring attack with 20 points, going 8-of-13 from the field. Sean Murphy '26 added 18 points and Johnson had a double-double with 11 points. John Vincent '26 also had 11 points.

Harris Dar '28 dished out five assists and blocked a career-high two shots. Jackson Leone '25, who is chasing the school record for steals in a season, had five. That boosted his career total to 121 steals, 17th-best in program history.

The result was never in question, as Grinnell scored 11 of the first 13 points and a short time later led 16-4. Jordan Lee '26 and Sean Walser '26 began the contest with treys before the Vikings got on the board.

Kai Te Huki '27 added a 3-pointer and jumper for an 11-2 lead. After two free throws by Lawrence, Lee scorched the net with a trey and Garcia scored in the paint for a 16-4 lead.

Grinnell built a 68-42 lead by halftime and never looked back on its way to victory.

The Pioneers take to the road Tuesday to face Beloit College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
