Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Furious Grinnell rally falls just short in thrilling loss to Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa - A furious comeback fell just short as Grinnell College's women's basketball team lost a one-point thriller to Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers trailed 52-42 with just over six minutes to go, but closed hard before falling 54-53.

Skylar Thomas '26 led the Pioneers' balanced scoring attack with 10 points, while Nikki Ware '25, Sara Booher '25 and Amelia Rigel '28 each had eight. Rigel's performance was sparked by a 6-of-6 effort at the free throw line. Booher grabbed 16 rebounds, while Ware added two assists and two steals.

Grinnell (9-6, 3-3 Midwest Conference) twice went ahead by four in the first period, the last time at 13-9 on a 3-pointer by Cassidy Pak '28. However, the Vikings rallied to lead 18-15 after one period and were up 30-27 at halftime. Grinnell had a strong start to the third period, going ahead 35-33 on a layup by Booher. But again the Vikings rallied and were ahead 48-42 by the end of the frame.

Lawrence (11-4, 5-1 MWC) went ahead by 10 in the final period, but that cushion was anything but safe. Pak made consecutive baskets and Rigel two free throws to make it 52-48 with 2:41 left. After a Lawrence basket, Thomas drained a trey with 1:02 left to narrow the score to 54-51.

Grinnell forced a turnover but couldn't capitalize and then fouled but the Vikings missed both free throws, setting up a thrilling finish. Lawrence put up a strong outside defensive presence in the waning seconds, preventing a 3-point attempt by Grinnell. The Pioneers did muster a last-second layup by Bailey Strovers '27 to account for the final score.

Grinnell is at Beloit College Tuesday. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
