Pioneer netters put up strong performance, but falls short against Wartburg

GRINNELL, Iowa - After starting its Midwest Conference slate on a stellar note, Grinnell College's volleyball team stepped out of league play Friday night for their first home match in a month.

The Pioneers put on a thrilling performance for fans at Darby Gymnasium, taking the first set against a powerful Wartburg College team before falling in four sets.

Grinnell had a superb effort at the net, coming up with six blocks which is second-best for the team this season. The Pioneers also served up nine aces.

Grinnell (7-11) won the opening set 25-19, an impressive feat after falling behind 5-1 right off the bat. The Pioneers fought back, eventually tying the contest at 10-all on a kill by Nicole Mlynski '26.

The teams were later tied 18-all before the Pioneers reeled off five points in a row with the aid of two Gabby Choy '26 aces. After Wartburg (13-6) scored a point, Mlynski recorded a kill and Emilee Appel '29 an ace to secure the victory.

The Knights bounced back to take the second set 25-16 and used a big run early in the third on their way to a 25-19 victory. 

Grinnell bolted out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set with the aid of a Hayley Taka '26 kill, ace serve by Keira Sullivan '27 and block from Millie Leonard '27 and Mlynski. Wartburg then rallied to go ahead, but the Pioneers made one last move as a three-point run brought them within 19-18. Molly Kuhn '29 had an ace in that span and Leonard a kill. But the Knights followed with a four-point run and claimed a 25-20 set victory to conclude the match.

Leonard had nine kills for the Pioneers and Sullivan added eight. Marlowe Hurst '28, Choy and Appel both served two aces and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 dished out 20 assists. Kylie Snell '26 contributed four blocks and Leonard added three. In the digs department, Choy had 17 and Gracie Lim '28 registered 13.

The Pioneers are off until next Saturday when they host Luther College at noon and Faith Baptist Bible at 2 p.m. Also that day, Faith Baptist meets Beloit College at noon and Luther faces Beloit at 2 p.m.
