Grinnell men's basketball team sets school mark for field goal percentage in 161-130 win over Greenville

Pioneers connect on 65.0 percent of their field goal attempts

GRINNELL, Iowa - When the nation's top scoring teams meet on the basketball court, one would expect an explosive affair.

But a school record for field goal efficiency was not on anyone's radar.

Grinnell College shattered its program record for field goal percentage in a game Wednesday night, connecting on 65.0 percent of its shots in a 161-130 victory over Greenville University at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers, who improved to 2-0, made 52-of-80 shots from the field including 30-of-39 (76.9 percent) in the second half.

Additionally, the Pioneers had nine players score in double figures which is pushing an all-time national mark though official records for that category are not kept by the NCAA.

Grinnell's point total ranks 10th in program history and the 94 points in the second half are second all-time, just one point behind the 95 put up against Providence-Manitoba in 2019.

The Pioneers' field goal percentage eclipsed the previous school mark of 63.3 percent against Marycrest in a 1990 game.

Additionally, the Pioneers made 43 free throws, which is fifth all-time, and shot 56 free throws, which ranks ninth.

Grinnell's point total is the highest for the program in two years when it scored 166 against Andrew.

Grinnell was led by Kai Te Huki '27, who scored 24 points. Sean Murphy '26 added 19 points, while Zach Rosen '26 had a career-high 16 to go along with an all-time best seven rebounds.

John Vincent '26 also had 16 points, Tyler Copes '29 poured in 15 and Nick Courtney '26, Gabe Garcia '27 and Luka Pinto '29 added 12 apiece. Tanner Deal '27 chipped in 10 points.

Pinto grabbed eight boards and Courtney had seven, a career-high. Garcia dished out seven assists, Copes blocked six shots and Pinto and Rosen came up with three steals apiece.

The teams went back and forth early, with the 1-2 Panthers building a 35-30 lead midway through the first half. Greenville later led 45-44 before the Pioneers put together a 14-point run that included treys by Murphy and Deal and two-point buckets by Strahinja Nikolic '27, Pinto and Te Huki. Rosen contributed two free throws in the run as Grinnell went ahead 57-45.

The Pioneers led 67-62 at halftime and scored the first four points of the second half on a jumper by Copes and two free throws by Courtney. Grinnell cruised to victory from there.

Grinnell is on the road for the first time Saturday with a 4 p.m. test at Macalester College.
