GC men's cross country team saves its best for last at NCAA Regional Championships

WAVERLY, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's cross country team saved its best for last with a strong showing at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Wartburg College Saturday.


The Pioneers finished ninth of 32 teams at the meet, one spot higher than their regional ranking. Among the teams Grinnell toppled was eighth-ranked Wheaton College.

The finish was Grinnell's highest regional placing since 2016.

Luke Robinson '26 and Ben Abelow '28 led the Pioneers, placing 50th and 51st in the 239-runner race with times of 26 minutes, 8.8 seconds and 26:09.2, respectively. Jack Lakin '29 was next in line for Grinnell, touring the 8-kilometer route in 26:27.9.

Other scorers for Grinnell were Greyson Imm '28 and Connor Heagy '26, 61st and 65th in 26:29.8 and 26:33.2. Also for the Pioneers, Sebastian Vilches '29 took 87th in 26:55.6 and Leif Dahl '29 placed 102nd in 27:15.4.

Grinnell finished with 279 points. Wartburg College won with 30 points and Cornell College had the individual champ in Isaac vanWestrienen, who finished in 24:00.9.
