Grinnell men cruise past Principia in dominant fashion

Pioneers' 65-point margin of victory is largest for the program in 2 seasons

ELSAH, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team not only snapped its two-game losing streak Saturday, the Pioneers did so in dominant fashion.

The Pioneers bolted out to a 68-41 halftime lead on their way to a 141-76 victory at Principia College. Grinnell remained perfect in its series against the Panthers, which dates back to 1992, winning for the 10th time with no losses.

The 65-point margin of victory is the largest in the series and the biggest overall for Grinnell since a 71-point win over Andrews University two seasons ago.

The Pioneers posted season-highs with 25 shots made from 3-point land, 35 assists and 20 steals.

Grinnell spread the scoring load, with seven players hitting double figures but no one player over 13. Kai Te Huki '27, Jacques Godard '29 and Kingzten Bristol '29 each tallied 13 points, Sean Murphy '26 poured in 12 and Gabe Garcia '27 and Nick Lundy '27 came up with 11 apiece.

Grinnell shot a season-best 52.1 percent on 3-pointers, hitting 25 of 48 shots from long range. The Pioneers also dominated the boards, holding a 54-27 edge in rebounds. Nick Courtney '26 was the Pioneers' top rebounder with a career-best eight, Lundy grabbed six and Strahinja Nikolic '27 and John Vincent '26 pulled down five each.

Zach Rosen '26 and Garcia each had eight assists, with Garcia's being a career-best. Rosen also led the team in steals with four while Courtney added three.

The outcome was never in doubt as the Pioneers bolted out to a fast start from the time Te Huki sank the game-opening 3-pointer. Treys by Murphy and Tanner Deal '27 plus a jumper from Garcia made it an 11-2 lead. After a Principia 3-pointer, Bristol and Rosen converted from beyond the arc to push the margin to 17-5. Grinnell continued to up its lead from there.

Grinnell improved to 3-2 overall with the win while the Panthers saw their mark dip to 1-5.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Tuesday when Beloit College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 5 p.m.
