Grinnell overcomes slow start to easily dispose of Beloit men's basketball team

GRINNELL,  Iowa - It took a bit for the Grinnell College men's basketball team to get going Tuesday night, but once it did there was no stopping the Pioneers.

Grinnell overcame an early 10-point deficit on its way to a 104-88 victory over Beloit College in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers rallied from the early gap to take a 51-46 lead into the locker room and then outscored the visitors 53-42 in the final 20 minutes. Grinnell has won four in a row over the Buccaneers and while posting their ninth consecutive victory at home against Beloit.

Beloit shot out to a 19-9 lead through the game's first eight minutes before the hosts gradually chipped away. The big momentum changer was a 13-point run where Grinnell turned a three-point gap into a 38-28 lead. Nick Lundy '27 began the spurt with consecutive jumpers to put the Pioneers ahead. John Vincent '26 followed with a layup, Aidan Wiley '29 drained a trey, Nick Courtney '26 scored from close range and Kingzten Bristol '29 made a layup for a 10-point lead.

Grinnell scored nine straight to begin the second half to all but put the game away. Kai Te Huki '27 began the half with a trey and Tanner Deal '27 hit two of his own to put the Pioneers ahead 60-46.

Lundy led Grinnell (4-2, 1-0 MWC) with a career-high 17 points on 8-of-10 field goal shooting, while Te Huki and Gabe Garcia '27 each had 15 and Wiley put in 12. Lundy also grabbed seven boards, Tyler Copes '29 and Vincent each blocked three shots and Garcia dished out a career-best nine assists. Zach Rosen '26 added eight assists and Te Huki led the team in steals with three.

Semaj Roy led Beloit (3-4, 0-1 MWC) with a game-high 21 points.

Grinnell entertains Dayspring Bible College on Saturday, with tip-off at Darby Gymnasium set for 1 p.m.
