Grinnell men's basketball team comes up short at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - While the Grinnell College men's basketball team missed a chance at qualifying for the Midwest Conference Tournament Tuesday night, the Pioneers will have more than one opportunity to seal the deal next week.

The Pioneers lost a 109-71 decision at defending MWC champ Illinois College to remain in second place in the league at 10-4 while moving to 17-6 overall. Illinois College is right behind Grinnell in the standings at 9-5 and 16-7 overall.

On a night where David Bluder '25 tied Grinnell's career record for games played with 98, the Pioneers led late in the first half before a Blueboy run gave the hosts a 51-44 halftime edge.

John Vincent '26 opened the second half with a basket to bring Grinnell within five, but Illinois College countered with an 11-point run for a 62-49 lead at the 16:14 mark. The Blueboys continued to pull away for the victory.

Gabe Garcia '27 led Grinnell with 15 points and Jackson Leone '25 put in 10. Leone, Tolu Johnson '25 and Nick Lundy '27 all have five boards and Johnson also blocked two shots. On the assists front, Leone, Harris Dar '28 and Garcia dished out two apiece. Leone, Zach Rosen '26, Sean Walser '26, Kai Te Huki '27 and Max DeGeorge '25 all had two steals.

Leone moved up to fourth on the Pioneers' season steals list with 74, Dar is 18th in assists with 116 and Garcia 20th in free throws made with 128. On the team season list, Grinnell is up to 391 steals. That is good for fourth place and just 26 away from the program record.

Grinnell plays its regular-season home finale next Wednesday when Beloit College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
