Grinnell baseball team can't overcome early deficit in loss to Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team spotted Greenville University a 7-1 lead through three innings and couldn't catch up in a 12-8 setback Monday.

The teams each had 11 hits, including three from Ben Kelly '25 and a pair by Mac McCain '25, Connor Goodson '26 and Wyatt Raymond '28.

Grinnell (1-2) got a run in the top of the first on Ethan Crawford's '25 solo homer to center, his third round-tripper in as many games. The Panthers responded with seven runs over the next three innings. Grinnell got solo runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings on an RBI single to left by Jacob Gaynor '28, bases-loaded walk by from Stuart Cash '27 and run-scoring single to center from Kelly.

The hosts put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 11-4 lead. The Pioneers made some noise in the late going, scoring two runs in the eighth inning on an RBI single to right by Connor Goodson '26 and run-scoring single to center by Raymond. After Greenville (2-2) scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, McCain belted a two-run double in the ninth.

Jackson Gutta '27, the first of five Pioneer pitchers, absorbed the loss.

Grinnell has a four-game set at Westminster College this weekend.
