Pioneer baseball team loses defensive-minded battle to Sewanee

PENSACOLA, Fla. - After the bats went wild in Grinnell College's baseball games the day before, Wednesday's contest against Sewanee was a defensive-minded affair.

Sewanee rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth on its way to a 4-2 victory at the Blue Wahoos Challenge at Admiral Fetterman Field.

Grinnell's Jackson Gutta '27 tossed 6.1 innings, scattering six hits and striking out six before giving way to Daniel Shaul '26. Though tagged with the loss, Shaul was solid by giving up just one hit in the final 1.2 innings.

The Pioneers' offense mustered six hits, with Joe Chanis '27 getting two and Ethan Crawford '25, Connor Goodson '26, Ben Kelly '25 and Jacob Gaynor '28 collecting one each.

Crawford provided the Pioneers with their first run, a solo homer to left field, to tie the game at 1-all in the fourth inning. The round-tripper was the 22nd of his career, putting him third all-time at Grinnell.

Brandon Chung '27 hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the sixth inning for Grinnell's other run.

Grinnell, 5-5 on the season, has Thursday off before taking on Concordia University of Wisconsin on Friday. Sewanee moved to 10-6.
