Pioneer softball team shows plenty of promise in season-opening setbacks

Grinnell drops games to Baldwin Wallace, Wisconsin Lutheran

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Though the Grinnell College softball team fell short in both games of its 2025 debut, the Pioneers showed plenty of promise at the Space Coast Spring Games Thursday.

The Pioneers opened the day with a 6-3 setback to Baldwin Wallace University and then saw a late comeback fall short in a 4-3 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Grinnell scored the first runs of the season allowed by Baldwin Wallace pitcher Marisa Hall. They cut into the Yellowjackets' 3-0 lead with a run in the sixth on Kayla O'Malley's '28 RBI single to left. After falling behind 6-1, Lindsey Schultz '27 belted a two-run double to left-center in the bottom of the seventh for Grinnell.

Grinnell managed five hits in the game, with Schultz collecting three. Lane Kohler '25 was the pitcher of record for the Pioneers, striking out two in five innings.

In the second game, the Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead on Lexi Herrick's '28 RBI single to right in the second inning. Her teammate, pitcher Emma Trani '26, had a perfect game going through 3.2 innings before the Warriors got a run in the fourth.

Wisconsin Lutheran added three more runs in the top of the sixth for a 4-1 lead, but the Pioneers retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Hannah Dykstra's 25 RBI double to left field and a run-scoring infield single by Sofia DiCarlo '25. Wisconsin Lutheran hung on in the seventh to eke out the victory.

Grinnell had six hits in the game and Trani worked 5.1 innings in the circle before giving way to Elise Strohm '28.

During the day, Dykstra moved up to eighth at Grinnell for career walks with 42 and 11th for RBIs with 57 and runs scored with 73. In the field, Jasmine Oda '25 now ranks fifth in career putouts with 444 and 13th in fielding chances with 465.

The Pioneers are back at it Friday, playing Wisconsin Lutheran again at 10 a.m. and then facing Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 12:15 p.m.
