Grinnell avenges earlier loss to Wisconsin Lutheran with 6-1 victory over Warriors

MELBOURNE, Fla. - One day after losing a one-run game to Wisconsin Lutheran College, the Grinnell College softball team gained a measure of revenge with a 6-1 victory over the Warriors Thursday at the Space Coast Spring Games.

Lane Kohler '25 and Ella Young '28 combined on a four-hitter. Kohler worked the first four innings, scattered three hits, struck out one and didn't issue a run while earning her first victory of the season. Young tossed one-hit ball the rest of the way for her first collegiate save.

Lindsey Schultz '27 picked up where she left off from the day before, coming up with three of the Pioneers' nine hits. Kohler added two hits.

Grinnell struck for four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Schultz scored on an error for the first run, Leanna Guerra '28 knocked in a run with a fielder's choice, Kohler slapped an RBI single to left field and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 hit a sacrifice fly to right. In the third, Bisterfeldt belted an RBI double down the left-field line for a 5-0 lead, and Sofia DiCarlo '25 plated a run with a fielder's choice in the fourth.

Grinnell followed with a 12-9 setback to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The game featured 26 hits, with Grinnell getting 11 of those. DiCarlo had three hits and Jasmine Oda '25 and Bisterfeldt added two apiece.

Kayla O'Malley '28 scored on a wild pitch to open the scoring in the first inning before WCLA responded with six unanswered runs. The Pioneers crept back with a three-run third inning and two-run fifth. In the third, Oda had an RBI single up the middle, Lexi Herrick '28 knocked in a run with a groundout and DiCarlo scored on a wild pitch. DiCarlo added an RBI triple to right-center in the fifth and Herrick plated a run with a single to right field to tie the game at 6-all.

MCLA scored six unanswered runs before the Pioneers made a slight comeback. In the sixth, O'Malley hit an RBI triple down the right-field line and Schultz knocked a sacrifice fly to center. Grinnell's two triples in the game rank sixth all time at GC. Elyse Pender '27 had an RBI single to center in the seventh to complete the scoring.

During the day, Hannah Dykstra '25 moved up to seventh all-time at Grinnell with 44 walks and Oda moved to 13th with 35. Dykstra has 20 stolen bases, 12th all-time, and Oda's 476 fielding chances are also 12th.

The 1-3 Pioneers play Nebraska Wesleyan University at 10 a.m. Saturday and Western Connecticut State at 12:15 p.m.
