Pioneer softball team loses nail-biters to Nebraska Wesleyan, WestConn

Oda ties school record for walks in a game with 4

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Grinnell College softball team played not one, but two nail-biters Saturday at the Space Coast Spring Games.

Competing in the roomy Fast Pitch Stadium, the Pioneers lost decisions of 4-2 to Nebraska Wesleyan University and 7-5 to Western Connecticut State in eight innings. Jasmine Oda '25 tied a school record in the latter contest with four walks.

Grinnell spotted Nebraska Wesleyan, picked to finish second in the American Rivers Conference, a 2-0 lead before scoring a run in the fourth on Oda's RBI single to center. The Prairie Wolves countered with a run in the bottom of the frame.

Sofia DiCarlo '25 belted an RBI triple down the line in the sixth to again make it a one-run game, but the winners got some breathing room with a tally in the bottom of the sixth.

DiCarlo finished with two hits to complement a stellar pitching performance by Lane Kohler '25, who gave up just one earned run in five innings.

WestConn scored four runs in the second inning of its victory before the Pioneers scratched their way back by scoring twice in the fifth on an RBI single by Lindsey Schultz '27 and an error and twice more in the sixth with Lexi Herrick's '28 two-run double.

The game was tied after seven innings, leading to the international tie-breaker. WestConn scored three runs in the top of the eighth and the Pioneers managed one in the bottom on Kayla O'Malley's '28 RBI single.

O'Malley had three of Grinnell's eight hits in the game and Schultz added two. Pitching-wise, Emma Trani '25 had a fine starting effort by scattering eight hits over six innings and fanning three batters.

On the day, Hannah Dykstra '25 moved up to ninth on GC's career list for runs scored with 79 and Oda moved to ninth in fielding chances with 493.

Grinnell, 1-5, has Sunday off before playing St. Norbert College and Rutgers-Newark on Monday.
