Grinnell closes Blue Wahoos Challenge in dominating fashion

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Grinnell College's baseball team wrapped up the Blue Wahoos Classic in dominating fashion Saturday, taking a doubleheader from the University of Wisconsin-Stout at Admiral Fetterman Field.

The Pioneers broke a 6-all tie with a four-run eighth inning to win the opener 10-6, and followed with a 6-1 decision to close out the sweep.

In the opener, Grinnell got offensive with 11 hits including a 4-for-4 performance by Ethan Crawford '25. Mac McCain '25 added two hits for the Pioneers.

The game was tied 6-all after seven innings. In the second, Jacob Gaynor '28 had an RBI on a fielder's choice and another run came across on an error. Crawford added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. In the sixth, Wyatt Raymond '28 had an RBI double and another run scored on an error in the seventh

In the eighth, Grinnell took control on Crawford's RBI single, two more runs were plated on wild pitches and Connor Goodson '26 scored on a balk.

The Pioneers used seven pitchers, with Jackson Gutta '27 getting the victory.

Grinnell had six players with one hit each in the second game. The Pioneers scored a run in the first on McCain's sacrifice fly, but the Blue Devils tied it in the bottom of the frame.

From there it was all Pioneers. In the sixth, Stuart Cash '27 hit a sacrifice fly and Jacob Gaynor '28 scored on a wild pitch. Cash added an RBI single in the fourth and Raymond an RBI double in the seventh.

Augie Ros '25 was the winning pitcher for the 7-6 Pioneers, scattering five hits and striking out three in four innings.

During the day, McCain moved up to fifth in program history with 495 career at-bats and seventh in runs scored with 105. Crawford is seventh in RBIs with 92.

The Pioneers stop in Conway, Ark., on their way back to Grinnell for solo games Monday and Tuesday with Hendrix College.
