Grinnell baseball team halts losing streak to Hendrix in explosive fashion

Pioneers put up 18 runs in win over Warriors

CONWAY, Ark. - Grinnell College entered Monday's baseball game having lost six games in a row against Hendrix College.

The Pioneers put an end to that streak, seeing its offense go wild in an 18-15 road victory over the Warriors.

Grinnell, which scored its most-ever runs against Hendrix in a 12-game series dating back to 2017, pounded out 19 hits and had 18 RBIs, the latter a figure that ranks sixth in program history. Ian Feld '25, Grinnell's starting pitcher, got the win to boost his career victory total to 12. That ranks eighth in GC history.

Joe Chanis '27 had four hits to lead the 8-6 Pioneers, while Nikolas Ruden '26 had three along with four runs scored. The runs total is eighth in program history. Ben Kelly '25, Ethan Crawford '25, Connor Goodson '26, Wyatt Raymond '28 and Jacob Gaynor '28 added two hits each.

Things didn't look good initially as the 9-8 Warriors shot out to a 5-0 lead. Grinnell bounced right back, though, scoring six runs in the second on a two-run homer by Raymond and two-run singles from Ruden and Kelly.

The Pioneers upped their lead in the third on a three-run homer by Stuart Cash '27 and an RBI single from Chanis. In the fourth, Goodson had a solo homer to make it 11-5.

After the Warriors climbed within three, Grinnnell struck for four runs in the fifth on a two-RBI fielder's choice by Goodson, bases-loaded hit by pitch by Raymond and an RBI single by Chanis to make it 15-8. The hosts scored twice in the sixth, but the Pioneers added two in the seventh on RBI singles by Chanis and Kelly.

Hendrix closed within 17-15 before the Pioneers scored a run in the ninth on Crawford's RBI single for some insurance.

Feld went 5.1 innings on the mound and fanned six in earning the victory. Grinnell got solid relief after that, with Matthew Nakamoto '25 closing out the victory with 2.2 innings of scoreless work. He fanned three batters.

The same teams meet again Tuesday.
