Big innings, solid pitching are perfect combination for Pioneer softball team

Grinnell disposes of St. Norbert, Rutgers-Newark

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Huge innings and solid pitching proved to be the perfect combination for the Grinnell College softball team as it won a pair of contests Monday at the Space Coast Spring Games.

The Pioneers erupted for six runs in the first inning of a 14-2 victory over St. Norbert College, and added another six in the final frame for good measure.

Facing Rutgers-Newark later, the Pioneers trailed 4-2 before exploding for nine runs in the fifth on their way to an 11-4 win.

Lane Kohler '25 fired a complete-game seven-hitter for Grinnell in the first game and the offense tied a school record with three triples.

Sofia DiCarlo '25 continued her tremendous start to the season with four hits, which is tied for third-most in program history. Also aiding the Pioneers' 17-hit attack with three hits apiece were Kayla O'Malley '28 and Hannah Dykstra '25. Nicolette Parrott '26 and Leanna Guerra '28 contributed two hits each.

The Pioneers' big first inning included a two-run triple by Guerra, two-run single from Parrott, bases-loaded walk by Kohler and sacrifice fly from Lindsey Schultz '27. Grinnell traded runs with the Green Knights over the next few innings, with an error and Schultz's groundout pushing across runs to make it 8-2.

In the seventh, Dyksta hit a two-run single, Kohler plated a run with another one-bagger and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 belted a three-run triple.

In the second game, Grinnell had 13 hits and got a steady pitching effort from Emma Trani '26 and Elise Strohm '28. Trani earned the win, scattering seven hits over five innings and striking out two. Strohm worked the last two frames and didn't allow a run.

Lexi Herrick '28 paced the offense with three hits, while Guerra, Elyse Pender '27 and Bisterfeldt added two apiece.

Grinnell got solo runs in the first and third on RBI singles from DiCarlo and Herrick. Entering the bottom of the fifth trailing 4-2, Grinnell's bats went wild. Sparking the nine-run frame were a two-run double from Guerra, two-run single by Herrick, RBI double by Bisterfeldt, run-scoring singles from Kohler, Schultz and Pender and a  wild pitch.

During the day, Dykstra moved up to sixth all-time at Grinnell in career walks with 46, eighth in runs scored with 83 and ninth in RBIs with 60. Jasmine Oda '25 now ranks third in career double plays turned with 22.

The 3-5 Pioneers wrap up their Florida trip Tuesday with games against the University of Hartford and Hamilton College
