Pioneers' offense keeps chugging along against Hendrix

GC baseball team blasts Warriors 17-3

CONWAY, Ark. - One day after putting up 18 runs, the Grinnell College baseball team's offense still had plenty of steam.

The Pioneers completed a two-game sweep of Hendrix College Tuesday, blasting the Warriors 17-3 in seven innings.

The Pioneers extended their winning streak to four games while improving to 9-6. Hendrix dipped to 9-9.

The Pioneers trailed 2-0 after one inning, but then turned things up with three runs in the second inning, seven in the third and six in the fourth. They topped off their scoring with a run in the sixth.

Grinnell's 19-hit attack was sparked by Joe Chanis' '27 four hits and three by each by Ethan Crawford '25 and Mac McCain '25. Stuart Cash '27, Ben Kelly '25, Connor Goodson '26 and Jacob Gaynor '28 all had two hits.

Jakob Runkel '26 earned the pitching win, scattering eight hits and striking out five in five innings. Ajay Griffin '27 tossed hitless ball in the final two innings to finish off the victory.

Gaynor's three-run double in the second gave the Pioneers a lead they would never relinquish. In the third, Crawford had an RBI triple, McCain, Cash and Kelly all knocked in runs with singles, Wyatt Raymond '28 and Sean Tashjian '25 hit sacrifice flies and another run came across on a wild pitch.

Grinnell's big fourth inning featured RBI singles by Chanis, Kelly, Crawford and McCain, as well as an error. Goodson ripped an RBI triple in the sixth.

During the day, Crawford moved up to fourth on Grinnell's career list for putouts with 619 and McCain is fifth in runs scored at 109.

The Pioneers are off until March 29 when they open Midwest Conference play at Illinois College.
