Grinnell baseball team homers early and often in come-from-behind victory at Illinois College

Pioneers belt 4 round-trippers in opening game

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The ball was flying out of the park early and often for the Grinnell College baseball team Saturday in the opening game of its Midwest Conference doubleheader at Illinois College.

The Pioneers homered four times in the game, which is tied for seventh-best in program history, as they rallied for a 12-6 victory. Connor Goodson '26 had two round-trippers, tied for sixth all-time at Grinnell.

Grinnell (10-7, 1-1 MWC) dug a 4-0 hole right off the bat, but had gone ahead 6-4 by the top of the third inning. The Blueboys tied it in the bottom of the third, but a four-run sixth inning gave Grinnell a lead it would never relinquish.

Stuart Cash '27 had four of Grinnell's 12 hits, while Goodson and Wyatt Raymond '28 had two apiece. Raymond's solo homer gave the Pioneers a run in the second inning, while an error and grand slam homer by Goodson resulted in the five-run third frame.

In the sixth, Cash hit an RBI single, Ethan Crawford '25 belted a two-run double and Mac McCain '25 added a run-scoring double. Cash and Goodson bashed solo homers in the eighth and ninth innings.

Ian Feld '25 worked 5.1 innings to earn the pitching win, boosting his season mark to 3-0. He struck out four.

Illinois College (13-8, 3-1 MWC) repeated with a four-run first inning in the second game on its way to a 9-2 victory. Crawford had two of Grinnell's seven hits, including a solo homer in the eighth inning. In the fifth, Nathan McCurdy '25 hit an RBI single.

The teams meet in the rubber match Sunday. The first pitch is slated for noon.
