Grinnell baseball team rewrites record book in 30-15 victory at Illinois College

Pioneers set 3 new school marks, break 1 Midwest Conference record

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team not only won the series clincher against Illinois College - the Pioneers did so in record-shattering fashion.

The Pioneers snapped three program records, as well as one Midwest Conference mark, as they blasted the Blueboys 30-15 Sunday afternoon. Grinnell has posted double-digit scoring outputs in four of its last five games.

School records came for runs in a game, RBIs in a game (28) and total bases in a game (46). The RBI total is also a new MWC mark, breaking the previous record of 27 by Ripon College in a 2023 game.

The new school marks break Grinnell's previous records of 22 runs (four times, most recently in 2022), 21 RBIs (twice, most recently in 2023) and 45 total bases (in 2009).

The run total is also second-highest in MWC history and trails only the mark of 32 established by Ripon in 2002, and the total bases total is just four shy of the league record.

Additionally, Grinnell's 24 hits and six homers both rank second in program history and 52 at-bats are fourth all-time.

Individually, Mac McCain's '25 eight RBIs and the five runs scored by Connor Goodson '26 and Ethan Crawford '25 all rank second in GC history. Goodson's two homers rank sixth, and two doubles by Crawford and McCain are eighth. Ben Skiles '28 and McCain each scored four runs, 10th all-time.

McCain had four hits in the game, Skiles, Goodson and Jacob Gaynor '28 all had three and Stuart Cash '27, Crawford, Sean Tashjian '25, Wyatt Raymond '28 and Joe Chanis '27 posted two apiece.

Illinois College jumped on top 7-1 through three innings, with Grinnell's run coming in the third on Cash's RBI single. The teams traded runs in the fourth, with McCain hitting an RBI double and Tashjian pushing across a run on a groundout.

The Pioneers closed within 9-8 in the fifth as Raymond belted a three-run homer and McCain hit a two-run single. Grinnell went ahead to stay with four runs in the sixth on a wild pitch and three-run homer from Goodson.

Grinnell (11-7, 2-1 MWC) continued to pour it on in the seventh, as McCain bashed a three-run homer, Goodson added a solo shot and Skiles hit an RBI single. Illinois College answered with runs in the bottom of the seventh to come within 17-11.

The Pioneers were definitely not done, coming up with a six-run eighth as Tashjian hit a three-run homer, Crawford smacked a two-run double and McCain hit an RBI double.

Illinois College (13-9, 3-2 MWC) countered in the bottom of the eighth, coming within 23-15 entering the ninth. Grinnell wasn't near satisfied, tallying seven runs in the final frame. Brandon Chung '27 hit a three-run homer, Crawford knocked an RBI double, Skiles plated a run with a single, McCain added a sacrifice fly and another run came across on a wild pitch. McCain now ranks second in GC history with 14 sacrifice flies and fifth in RBIs with 107.

Grinnell used five pitchers in the game, with Shea Goel '28 getting the victory. He tossed four-hit ball over 4.1 innings.

The Pioneers head to Lincoln, Neb., on Tuesday to face Nebraska Wesleyan University in a doubleheader. The first pitch is 1 p.m.
