Grinnell baseball team bounces back in 2nd game to shut out Nebraska Wesleyan

Shortridge fires Pioneers' first complete game since 2022

GRINNELL, Iowa - After losing a 13-12 heart-breaker in the opener, the Grinnell College baseball team stormed back with a stellar all-around team performance for a 6-0 victory at Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday.

Paul Shortridge '28 fired a complete-game seven-hitter for the Pioneers in the second game, striking out three and not issuing any walks. His complete game marks the first for Grinnell since Garret Nasif in 2022 and the first complete-game shutout since Brock Weirather's perfect game in 2021.

Shortridge was aided by errorless Pioneer defense and timely hitting that resulted in one run in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth. Mac McCain '25 gave the Pioneers all the offense they needed in the fourth frame with a solo homer to left. McCain had two of the team's six hits in the game.

In the sixth, Ethan Crawford '25 bashed an RBI double to right-center, Wyatt Raymond '28 reached on an error to plate another run, Brandon Chung '27 hit a two-run single to center and Joe Chanis '27 added a run-scoring single to center.

Grinnell (12-8) fell behind 2-0 right off the bat in the opener before taking a 7-2 lead with five runs in the second inning and two in the third. Jacob Gaynor '28 hit a two-run single to right in the second, Ben Skiles '28 plated two more with a single to center and Crawford lofted an RBI single to left. Raymond followed with a two-run homer in the third. The teams traded runs in the fourth, with Crawford's solo homer accounting for Grinnell's.

The Pioneers kept it up in the fifth, scoring four runs as Sean Tashjian '25 hit an RBI double to left, Chanis plated a run with a single to center, Gaynor hit a sacrifice fly to left and Ben Kelly '25 sent an RBI double to left to make it 12-9.

Nebraska Wesleyan (13-6) scored three times in the sixth to tie it and won in the bottom of the eighth on a run-scoring balk.

Skiles and Crawford each had two hits to lead the Pioneers' 10-hit attack. Kenji Kajita '25 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

During the games, Crawford moved up to ninth on GC's all-time list for total bases with 224 and McCain jumped to eighth for games played with 130.

Grinnell's long-awaited home opener is Saturday when Monmouth College visits Pioneer Park for a twin bill starting at noon.
