Pioneer baseball team bounces back in big way against Monmouth

Grinnell avenges loss in Saturday's opener

GRINNELL, Iowa - After losing a heart-breaker in Saturday's 2025 home opener, Grinnell College's baseball team came back with a vengeance at Pioneer Park.

Grinnell pounded out 15 hits, including four homers, in the second game of the day on its way to a 19-6, seven-inning victory over Monmouth College.

The homer total ranks seventh in program history, as Nikolas Ruden '26, Ethan Crawford '25, Mac McCain '25 and Cole Philpott '25 all had round-trippers. Jacob Gaynor '28 had three of Grinnell's hits, while Crawford, McCain and Connor Goodson '26 added two each.

Starting pitcher Shea Goel '28 picked up the victory, scattering four hits over five innings and striking out three. Paul Shortridge '28 and Campbell Plishker '26 finished off the win.

The teams each scored twice in the second inning, with Grinnell's runs coming via Philpott's two-run homer. Crawford and McCain each had RBI doubles in the third, while Crawford's grand slam homer sparked a five-run fourth.

The Pioneers kept it up in the fifth with a six-run outburst. Gaynor hit an RBI single, McCain lifted a sacrifice fly and Wyatt Raymond '28 knocked in two runs with a single. In the sixth, Ruden and McCain each bashed two-run homers.

Grinnell (13-9, 3-2 Midwest Conference) got out to a lead in the opener with three runs in the bottom of the first as Goodson hit a run-scoring single and two more runs came across when Raymond reached on an error.

Monmouth (8-14, 3-4 MWC) battled back, though, scoring nine unanswered runs. The Pioneers scratched their way back into it, scoring a run in the fourth on Gaynor's homer and adding two in the fifth on Goodson's RBI single and an error. In the sixth, Ben Kelly '25 hit an RBI triple and Raymond bashed a homer in the seventh.

Kelly had three of Grinnell's 11 hits and Ben Skiles '28, Goodson and Raymond each hit two. Jakob Runkel '26 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

McCain moved up to second on Grinnell's career hits list with 191 and total bases with 292, fourth in RBIs with 113 and seventh in games played with 132. Crawford ranks sixth in RBIs with 109 and seventh in total bases with 229.

The teams conclude their three-game set Sunday at Pioneer Park with a single game, starting at noon.
