Record-breaking performance paves the way for Grinnell split with Lawrence

McCain breaks school record for hits in a career, ties mark for runs scored

APPLETON, Wis. - Not only did Grinnell College's baseball team bounce back to win the second game of its doubleheader at Lawrence University Saturday, the Pioneers did so in record-setting fashion.

Mac McCain '25, who earlier in the week set the new school mark for RBIs in a career, established a new record for hits in a career on Saturday and tied the mark for career runs scored.

McCain now has 205 hits, breaking the mark of 201 by Hall of Famer Mike Nodzenski from 2009-12. McCain also has 128 runs scored to tie Nodzenski for top honors.

Grinnell (16-11, 4-4 Midwest Conference) rolled over the Vikings 12-3 in the second game of the twin bill. The Pioneers pounded out 16 hits and got a strong starting pitching performance from Jakob Runkel '26, who struck out seven and issued just one unearned run in 6.1 innings.

Ben Skiles '28 and McCain each had three hits for Grinnell, while Ethan Crawford '25, Connor Goodson '26, Nikolas Ruden '26 and Joe Chanis '28 added one each.

Goodson put Grinnell ahead to stay in the first with a two-run single up the middle. In the fourth, Chanis hit a solo homer to left and in the fifth came up with a two-run single to left.

McCain made it 6-1 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to center and plated two runs in the eighth with a homer to left. In the ninth, Jacob Gaynor '28 blasted a two-run double down the right-field line and McCain smashed a three-run homer to left.

Lawrence (10-12, 4-4 MWC) rallied to win the opener 10-7 after trailing 5-2. Grinnell outhit the Vikings 11-10, with McCain getting four hits and Goodson two.

Grinnell went up 3-0 on Crawford's two-run homer to left in the first and Cole Philpott's '25 RBI infield single in the second. After the Vikings closed within 3-2, Grinnell got a run on a wild pitch in the fifth and RBI single to center from McCain in the sixth for a 5-2 edge.

Lawrence came back to go ahead, but the Pioneers retook the lead at 7-6 in the top of the eighth on McCain's two-run homer to left. However, the Vikings got four runs in the bottom of the eighth and hung on to win.

Besides his records, McCain moved up to fifth all-time in games played with 137 and sixth in homers with 19. Crawford ranks fifth in RBIs with 112 and sixth in total bases with 239.

Grinnell and Lawrence round out their series Sunday with a single game at noon.
