GC baseball team snaps 3-game losing streak with dominating performance

Ben Kelly ties school record for doubles in 16-3 victory

BELOIT, Wis. - In the midst of a three-game losing streak, the Grinnell College baseball team snapped out of its funk in a furious way Saturday afternoon.

After losing the opening game of its doubleheader at Beloit College 8-3, the Pioneers' offense erupted for a 16-3 victory over the Bucs in the second contest.

Ben Kelly '25 highlighted the win by tying a school record with three doubles, and the Pioneers' seven overall doubles rank third all-time. Kelly tied seven other Pioneers for the record and is the first to do so since 2023. Connor Goodson '26 and Joe Chanis '27 each had two doubles, ninth all-time at GC.

Grinnell's 17-hit attack featured plenty of balance, with Stuart Cash '27, Goodson, Kelly and Chanis all getting three hits. Jacob Gaynor '28 added two hits.

Daniel Shaul '26 earned the pitching win, giving up five hits and fanning one in 4.1 innings.

The Pioneers bolted out to a 11-1 lead through three innings. Goodson hit a two-run double to right in the first and Kelly had an RBI double to center. In the second, Cash and Ethan Crawford '25 hit RBI singles, Kelly plated a run with a double and Ben Skiles '28 lofted a sacrifice fly. Two errors, a balk and RBI double by Goodson allowed four runs to score in the third.

Grinnell got one run in the sixth on a Chanis RBI double, while Goodson hit an RBI single in the seventh and Sean Tashjian '25 belted a three-run homer to right.

Beloit got out to a 7-1 lead in the opener on its way to victory. Grinnell managed 10 hits, with Cash getting four and Kelly a pair
The Pioneers got one run in the third on Mac McCain's '25 RBI double and added two in the fifth on an error and Kelly's RBI single.

Jakob Runkel '26 was the pitcher of record for the Pioneers, who are 5-7 in the Midwest Conference and 17-14 overall. Beloit moved to 7-5 in the league and 19-11 in all games.

Grinnell travels to Mount Vernon Tuesday for a MWC doubleheader against Cornell College.
