Amazing comeback pushes Grinnell to victory over Cornell in MWC baseball game

Rams come back to win 2nd game

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Down, but not out.

That's the situation the Grinnell College baseball team found itself in during Tuesday's opening game at Cornell College.

The Pioneers found themselves trailing 9-4 after seven innings and 9-5 entering the ninth. Instead of folding, Grinnell ripped off five runs in the top of the ninth - including four with two out - and shut down the Rams in the bottom of the inning to secure a 10-9 come-from-behind victory.

Ethan Crawford '25 opened the ninth by reaching base on an error and Mac McCain '25 singled to left before Connor Goodson '26 plated a run with a single to right. The Rams recorded two outs and Ben Kelly '25 walked in between, putting Grinnell within an out of being finished.

Instead, Joe Chanis '27 bashed an RBI single to center to make it 9-7 and Jacob Gaynor '28 walked to load the bases. Stuart Cash '27 cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center to put the Pioneers ahead by a run.

Matthew Nakamoto '25 took the mound for Grinnell in the bottom of the ninth and only gave up a single, also inducing two flyouts and a fielder's choice to earn his fourth save of the season. Nakamoto ranks sixth in GC history with five career saves.

The teams combined for 32 hits, with Grinnell managing 15 while also being aided by seven Cornell errors. Cash, Chanis and Gaynor all had three hits for the Pioneers, while McCain and Goodson managed two apiece.

Kenji Kajita '25, the fifth of six Grinnell pitchers, got the win after tossing a hitless eighth inning.

Grinnell jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second inning when Cash hit an RBI double, Chanis and Gaynor added run-scoring singles and Ben Skiles '28 pushed across a run with a groundout. After Cornell scored eight unanswered runs, the Pioneers got a run back in the ninth on Cash's RBI single to center.

Grinnell (18-15, 6-8 Midwest Conference) had six doubles in the game, seventh-best in program history, and Cash tied for ninth on GC's all-time list with a pair of two-baggers.

Cornell (11-21, 3-11 MWC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second game and held on for a 7-6 victory. The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Crawford walked with the bases loaded, McCain hit an RBI single to right and another run came across on an error, making it 6-3.

The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the seventh when Cash and Skiles recorded RBIs. Down 6-4 entering the top of the ninth, Chanis scored on an error but that's as close as Grinnell could get.

McCain now ranks second in program history for career games played with 143, while Crawford moved to third in fielding chances with 711 and 10th in doubles with 29.

The Pioneers entertain Ripon College in a three-game series this weekend.
