Grinnell baseball team pulls out extra-inning thriller over Ripon

McCain ties school record for games played in a career

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team saw both ends of the spectrum Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

The Pioneers used an exciting comeback to pull out a 4-3, 10-inning victory over Ripon College in the opener on a beautiful, sunny day. Grinnell nearly made it a sweep, but the Red Hawks erupted for seven runs in the ninth inning of the second game to record a 14-11 victory.

Mac McCain '25 tied Grinnell's career record for games played Saturday, recording his 145th to draw even with Anthony Mack. Mack played from 2013-16.

In the bottom of the 10th inning in the opener, Wyatt Raymond '28 led off with a single to right. Pinch runner Nathan McCurdy '25 stole second and Stuart Cash '27 was hit by a pitch. Ben Skiles '28 followed with a bunt single and, after an out was recorded, McCain singled in the winning run.

Grinnell got its first run in the second inning on Jacob Gaynor's '28 RBI double, and scored twice in the eighth on Ethan Crawford's '25 RBI single and a sacrifice fly by McCain.

Crawford had three hits in the game and Skiles managed two. First baseman Connor Goodson '26 recorded 18 putouts, which ranks fifth in program history. He also had 18 fielding chances, 10th all-time.

Matthew Nakamoto '25, the third of three Grinnell pitchers, worked the final four innings for the victory.

Grinnell (7-9 Midwest Conference, 19-16 overall) shot out to a 6-2 lead in the second game, scoring once in the fifth on Raymond's solo homer to right-center and putting up six runs in the sixth as Gaynor hit a two-run triple, Raymond had a sacrifice fly and Ben Kelly '25 and Joe Chanis '27 each had RBI singles.

Ripon (7-8 MWC, 14-19 overall) tied it 7-all in the seventh, but the Pioneers put up four runs in the eighth as Skiles, McCain and Goodson all hit RBI singles and Crawford a sacrifice fly.

Goodson led Grinnell's hitting attack with three hits, while Skiles, Crawford, McCain and Chanis had two apiece.

During the day, Crawford moved up to fourth in both career RBIs and total bases at Grinnell with 117 and 250, respectively.

Grinnell and Ripon close out their three-game set with a solo contest Sunday, starting at noon.
