GC baseball team gets key stretch run victory over Cornell

Pioneer offense gets 13 hits, Feld fires 4-hitter in mercy-rule victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - Knowing a strong stretch run is needed to qualify for the Midwest Conference Tournament, the Grinnell College baseball team delivered in impressive fashion Tuesday afternoon.

Grinnell put together 13 hits and got a four-hit complete-game pitching effort by Ian Feld '25 to roll over Cornell College 11-1 in seven innings at Pioneer Park.

Grinnell improved to 21-16 overall and 9-9 in the MWC, just one game behind fourth-place Illinois College in the league standings. The top four teams qualifiy the MWC Tourney. Cornell fell to 14-22 in all games and 6-12 in the league.

Feld struck out eight batters and walked only one to improve to 4-0 on the season. He now ranks eighth in program history with 147 Ks.

Ben Skiles '28 and Ethan Crawford '25 paced the offense with three hits each, while Mac McCain '25 added two. Crawford moved up to 10th on Grinnell's career list for runs scored with 102.

Grinnell got nearly half its runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Joe Chanis '27 belted a two-run double to left-center and Crawford, Ben Kelly '25 and Jacob Gaynor '28 all plated runs with singles.

A wild pitch and Connor Goodson's '26 sacrifice fly in the second inning made it 7-0, and Grinnell got another run in the fourth for an 8-0 edge.

Cornell scored in the fifth inning before the Pioneers countered with a run in the sixth on Goodson's RBI double to right-center. The Pioneers won it via the mercy rule in the bottom of the seventh when Skiles and McCain each hit run-scoring singles.

Grinnell closes out the regular season this weekend, beginning with a home doubleheader against Knox College Saturday. First pitch in the Senior Day affair is at noon. The Pioneers then head to Galesburg, Ill., on Sunday for a solo game.
