Pioneer baseball team rewrites record book in dominating victory over Knox

Grinnell also wins 2nd game on Senior Day to clinch spot in MWC Tourney

GRINNELL, Iowa - An explosive school-record performance on Senior Day helped pave the way to a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament for the Grinnell College baseball team.

Grinnell established new school marks for runs, hits, RBIs and total bases in a 32-3 thumping of Knox College in Saturday's opener at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers then provided an encore, toughing out a 4-2 victory in the second game to sew up a spot in the MWC Tourney.

The tourney, slated for next weekend, will be at a site to be determined. Grinnell will learn its foe after tomorrow's regular-season slate is concluded.

Grinnell's 32 runs in the opener broke its previous school mark of 30, set earlier this year. The Pioneers' 32 RBIs, 30 hits and 52 total bases were also school records.

Ben Skiles '28 had five hits, second all-time at Grinnell, and Sean Tashjian '25 scored five runs. That also ranks second, as do the team's eight doubles. Connor Goodson '27 had 11 total bases in the game, seventh all-time. Goodson belted three homers on the day.

Grinnell (11-9 MWC, 23-16 overall) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Skiles' RBI double. In the 10-run second inning, Stuart Cash '27 belted a grand slam, Goodson added a two-run homer, Skiles hit a two-run single, Mac McCain '25 hit an RBI single and Cash walked with the bases loaded.

Knox (6-14 MWC, 14-23 overall) scored its three runs in the third, but the Pioneers put up five in the fourth as Goodson hit a three-run homer and Jacob Gaynor '28 plated two runs with a single.

Grinnell erupted for nine more runs in the fifth as McCain bashed a three-run homer, Cole Philpott '25 hit a two-run double and Joe Chanis '27, Nathan McCurdy '25, Nikolas Ruden '26 and Skiles all hit RBI singles.

The Pioneers kept it up in the sixth as Conor Tashjian '28 hit a two-run triple, Ruden added an RBI double, Philpott, Jackson Waters '27 and Christopher Gulley '27 hit RBI singles and McCurdy pushed across a run on a groundout.

Shea Goel '28 was the winning pitcher, scattering seven hits and fanning four in five innings.

Grinnell broke a scoreless tie in the second game with two runs in the sixth and went on to win. Jakob Runkel '26, Ian Feld '25 and Matthew Nakamoto '25 combined on a steady pitching performance for Grinnell. Runkel earned the win, giving up four hits and striking out six in seven innings. Feld fanned two over the next 1.2 innings and Nakamoto notched the save by striking out the lone batter he faced.

McCain, Goodson and Chanis all had three hits to lead the Pioneers' offense. Goodson belted a two-run homer in the sixth, while Ben Kelly '25 hit an RBI single in the seventh and McCain added a run-scoring double.

McCain, who had already tied Mike Nodzenski for the Pioneer single-season RBI record, now owns it by himself with 58 on the year. On the career chart, McCain moved up to second in RBIs with 140.

Ethan Crawford '25 is tied for the career lead in times hit by pitches at 34, is third in fielding chances with 755 and ninth in runs scored with 103. Sean Tashjian ranks 10th in career walks with 61.

On the pitching front, Nakamoto is fourth in all-time saves with six while Feld and Runkel rank seventh and ninth in strikeouts with 153 and 150, respectively.

Grinnell closes out the regular season Sunday with a solo game at Knox.
