Grinnell blasts Nebraska Wesleyan on beautiful afternoon at Pioneer Park

McCain sets school record for career at-bats

GRINNELL, Iowa - If there was any sting remaining from two tough losses to Monmouth College over the weekend, that feeling was certainly washed away Wednesday.

Grinnell blasted Nebraska Wesleyan University on a beautiful afternoon at Pioneer Park, rolling up victories of 12-0 and 14-6.

It was a record-breaking day, as Mac McCain '25 set a new Pioneer standard with 541 career at-bats. That broke the previous mark of 537 by Anthony Mack from 2013-16.

Three Pioneer pitchers teamed up for the shutout in the opening game, with Augie Ros '25 getting the win by scattering two hits over five innings. He struck out two. Ajay Griffin '27 and Neill Natori '25 each followed with one inning of hitless relief.

Grinnell piled up 10 hits, with McCain collecting three and Connor Goodson '26 a pair. McCain knocked in six runs, which ranks seventh in program history, and homered twice, which is sixth. Goodson's hits were both doubles, a figure that ranks eighth in GC history.

Grinnell got all the offense it needed in the first inning on McCain's RBI single to left. In the second, Jacob Gaynor '28 hit an RBI single to right for a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers put up two runs in the third on Goodson's RBI double to left-center and a sacrifice fly by Joe Chanis '28.

McCain blasted a homer to left-center in the fifth and grand slam in the sixth. Also in the sixth, Wyatt Raymond '28 bashed a three-run homer to left.

Grinnell followed with a 17-hit attack in the second game, with McCain, Nikolas Ruden '26, Raymond, Brandon Chung ;27, Chanis and Gaynor all having two.

Two big innings sparked the Pioneers, as they had seven runs in the first and six in the fifth. In the first, Ruden swatted a three-run homer, Raymond hit a solo shot, Cole Philpott '25 plated two runs with a double down the left-field line and McCain hit an RBI single.

Gaynor had an RBI single in the second and Chanis hit a two-run double in the fifth. Also in the fifth, Gaynor and Connor Tashjian '28 hit RBI singles and Raymond and Chung walked with the bases loaded.

Paul Shortridge '28, a week after dominating the Prairie Wolves in Lincoln, Neb., got the win again Wednesday by giving up just two hits and striking out three in four innings.

Besides his at-bats record, McCain also moved up Grinnell's career chart in RBIs (third with 121), games played (sixth with 135) and homers (10th with 16).

Both teams are 15-10 on the season.

Grinnell travels to Appleton, Wis., this weekend for a key three-game Midwest Conference series against Lawrence University.
