Grinnell drops regular-season finale to Knox in extra innings

Pioneers will head to Appleton, Wis. for MWC Tourney later this week

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team scored in the top of the 10th inning, but Knox College rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame to give the hosts a 7-6 victory in a back-and-forth affair Sunday afternoon.

Despite the loss, the Pioneers had already clinched a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament after sweeping the Prairie Fire Saturday. Grinnell, which finished fourth in league with an 11-10 mark, will play top-seeded Lawrence University Friday morning in Appleton, Wis.

The 23-17 Pioneers, who have their most overall victories since the 2016 campaign, saw Mac McCain '25 gain the program's all-time record for sacrifice flies with 17.

Knox, 7-14 in the MWC and 15-23 overall, got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Pioneers put up five runs in the fourth. Ethan Crawford '25 belted an RBI single to right, McCain hit a sacrifice fly to right and Sean Tashjian '25 sent a three-run homer to right.

The Prairie Fire answered with three runs in the fifth and neither team scored the rest of regulation, forcing extras.

In the top of the 10th, McCain hit an RBI single to right only to see the hosts score twice in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single.

Grinnell had five hits in the game, with McCain getting three of them. The Pioneers used five pitchers, with Kenji Kajita '25 getting tagged with the decision.
