Grinnell men's soccer team opens with 2-all draw against Coe

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's soccer team twice gained leads on Coe College before settling for a 2-all tie with the Kohawks in season-opening action Friday afternoon on the Pioneers' home pitch.

After a scoreless first half, Grinnell's Kanata Mizutani '29 scored his first collegiate goal two minutes into the second stanza on an assist by Demi Oni '27. On the play, Oni worked down the right side of the box and fired a pass in front of the net to Mizutani, who pushed it in from close range.

Coe tied it up two minutes later, but Oliver Northing '26 broke the tie for Grinnell in the 62nd minute when he delivered a penalty kick goal. On the PK, Northing fired a low line drive to the left part of the net as the keeper dove the other way. It was Northing's 16th career goal.

It remained 2-1 until just over a minute remaining when the Kohawks found the back of the net.

Grinnell won the shots battle 6-4, with Oni taking two shots for the Pioneers and Northing, Ian O'Loughlin '28, Mizutani and Josh Ijiwola '28 adding one apiece.

Jayson Kunkel '26 and Jack Alexander '29 each worked a half in net for Grinnell, with Alexander making one save.
