Pioneer men's soccer team strikes quickly in 1-all deadlock at Dubuque

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College made a dent on the scoreboard almost immediately and held command most of the way before a second-half goal by the University of Dubuque resulted in a 1-all men's soccer deadlock Saturday night.

Just four minutes into the contest, Jaxon Willoughby '26 scored his first goal of the season and 10th in his Pioneer career on an assist by Oliver Northing '26.

Northing lofted a long pass from well within the Pioneers' defensive end of the field and Willoughby chased it down, beating his opponent to the ball. Willoughby gained control just outside the top left corner of the box and while, on the run, lined a shot to his right past the diving Spartan keeper and into the net. It was Northing's 12th career assist.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime and well into the second stanza before the Spartans scored in the 72nd minute to force a tie that was never resolved.

The final score wasn't the only area where the teams were virtually equal. Each attempted nine shots and the Pioneers held a 6-5 edge in corners.

Willoughby and Samuel Gojjam '27 each took two shots for Grinnell, while Demi Oni '27, Northing, Adam Gallegos '28, Zander Salva '29 and Kanata Mizutani '28 added one each.

Jayson Kunkel '26 and Jack Alexander '29 shared keeper duties for Grinnell, with each recording a save.

Grinnell moved to 0-0-2 on the season, while the Spartans dropped to 0-1-1.

The Pioneers host their annual alumni game at 2 p.m. Sunday at Springer Field. On Wednesday, Grinnell hosts Simpson College at 4:30 p.m.
