Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

GC men's soccer team gives regionally-ranked Carleton all it can handle

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's soccer team gave regionally-ranked Carleton College all it could handle Wednesday afternoon before the Knights escaped with a 4-2 non-conference win.

Emmett Krez '29 scored both goals for the Pioneers at Springer Field, the first scores of his collegiate career, and Samuel Gojjam '27 was credited with assists on both to boost his career total to six. Grinnell's goal total equals a season-high for an opponent against Carleton.

After a scoreless battle for half of the first stanza, Grinnell struck first when Gojjam gained control of the ball directly in front of the box after beating his defender. He spun around and delivered a perfect pass into the left side of the box where Krez avoided the approaching keeper and tapped the ball into the lower right part of the net in the 24th minute.

Carleton, ranked seventh in the region, responded with goals in the 27th and 36th minutes for a 2-1 halftime lead.

But Grinnell (1-2-3) was unfazed by that, tying the game in the 60th minute on another goal by Krez. Following a free kick from the right side, Gojjam won a battle for the ball in the box. He flipped a pass to Krez, who fired a shot from just inside the box on the right side over the Carleton keeper and into the net.

However, Carleton (3-1) responded with two goals in the 63rd minute to secure the victory.

The shots battle was virtually even, with Carleton holding an 8-7 edge. Krez had two of Grinnell's shots while Beacan Mottl '28, Gojjam, Oliver Northing '26, Jaxon Willoughby '26 and Jake Brecknock '28 added one apiece.

Jayson Kunkel '26 and Jack Alexander '29 shared keeper duties for Grinnell, each giving up two goals.

The Pioneers are at home again Friday when Bethel University visits Springer Field for a 4:30 p.m. test.
