Grinnell men's cross country team registers strong performance at home event

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College rose to the occasion in its opportunity to compete on the home course, putting four runners in the top 12 at Saturday's 63d Annual Les Duke Invitational cross country meet.
 
Ben Abelow '28 and Connor Heagy '26 led the charge for the Pioneers at Grinnell College Golf Course, placing sixth and seventh in the 135-runner field with times of 26 minutes, 45.9 seconds and 27:15.8, respectively.
 
Two first-years were next in line for the Pioneers in steamy weather conditions, as Jack Lakin '29 took 10th in 27:34.6 and Leif Dahl '29 was 12th in 27:42.5. Rounding out Grinnell's scorers was Greyson Imm '28, 21st place in 28:20.4.
 
Also for Grinnell, Sebastian Vilches '29 was 24th in 28:30.8 and Andy Chestovich '26 took 26th in 28:42.0.
 
The Pioneers were third of nine squads in the team standings with 56 points, just two behind regionally-ranked Simpson College. Central College won the meet with 37 points.
 
The individual champ was James Johnson of Simpson with a time of 26:10.1.
 
Grinnell has next weekend off before competing in the Central Dutch Open on Sept. 26.
