Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell men's soccer team refuses to surrender, posts come-from-behind win at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - Down, but by no means out.

Oliver Northing '26 made sure of that, scoring two late goals to propel the Grinnell College men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Eureka College Sunday afternoon.

The win kept Grinnell perfect against the Red Devils, moving their edge to 4-0 in the series that began in 2010.

It also marked the first victory of the year in the Pioneers' rugged early-season schedule, as they improved to 1-1-3. Eureka saw its mark fall to 2-2.

Grinnell dominated the stat sheet, owning a 20-11 edge in shots and 11-6 margin in corners. The shot total is the highest for the Pioneers since a game against Beloit College late last season. Grinnell also held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.

After a scoreless first half, the Red Devils put a mark on the scoreboard in the 51st minute. The Pioneers continued to fight back, eventually evening the match at 1-all on Northing's penalty kick with 15-plus minutes remaining.

But the Pioneers were not ready to settle for a draw in the physical bout. And they didn't, as just six minutes later Northing found the back of the net again for a lead the visitors would not relinquish. It was Northing's team-high third goal this season and 18th in his career.

Jayson Kunkel '26 and Jack Alexander '29 shared keeper duties for Grinnell, with Kunkel making three saves without relinquishing a goal. Alexander added one save.

Samuel Gojjam '27 was a key component in the Pioneers' offense, firing off eight shots. Emmett Krez '29 added three shots, while Jack Pennachio '28, Northing and Oliver Klemm '29 tallied two apiece. Beacan Mottl '28, Demi Oni '27 and Zander Salva '29 had one shot apiece.

Grinnell is back home for two contests in a row, the first of those Wednesday against Carleton College. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. at Springer Field. Two days later, the Pioneers entertain Bethel University at 4:30 p.m.
