Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell bounces back from early hole, but can't overcome Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's women's basketball team dug out of a big hole early and made multiple charges at Knox College, but the Prairie Fire used a strong run down the stretch to pull out a 52-42 victory Wednesday night.

A tough night shooting hurt the Pioneers, who hit 23.7 percent of their shots from the field - including 14.8 percent from 3-point land - while going 43.5 percent at the free throw stripe.

After scoring the first basket for its lone lead of the game, Grinnell (4-4 Midwest Conference, 7-9 overall) saw the hosts reel off 10 unanswered points. Grinnell closed within 11-9 by the end of the first period and was down 21-17 at intermission.

In the third quarter, two free throws and a 3-pointer by Skylar Thomas '26 helped Grinnell turn a six-point gap into a 23-22 deficit. The Pioneers pulled within one point on three other instances in the period, the last when Kelsey Ericksen's '26 layup made it 37-36 entering the fourth stanza.

Nora Lynch's '28 jumper early in the final period brought the Pioneers within 39-38, but Knox (6-2 MWC, 7-9 overall) recovered with a 7-1 run for a 46-39 edge with 4:59 left. The Prairie Fire held off the visitors the rest of the way.

Thomas led Grinnell with nine points and Lynch had eight. Juniper Schwartzman '27 had a big game on the boards with 14, Carolyn Pierce '27 dished out two assists and Ava Wu '29 and Megan Walters '29 each came up with two steals. Walters' steal total is a career-high.

The Pioneers entertain Lake Forest College Saturday at approximately 3 p.m. Senior Day activities will immediately follow the men's game, which precedes the women's contest.
